Hamas and Fatah Sign Historic Unity Agreement in Beijing

 ### Hamas and Fatah Sign Historic Unity Agreement in Beijing

**July 23, 2024** - In a landmark development, Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have signed an agreement in Beijing to end their longstanding division and strengthen Palestinian unity. This historic agreement was announced following reconciliation talks hosted by China, involving 14 Palestinian factions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the agreement is dedicate d to the great reconciliation and unity of all factions, emphasizing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people. An agreement on post-Gaza war governance and the establishment of a provisional national reconciliation government was also reached.

Despite the historic nature of the agreement, questions remain about the role Hamas, which is not part of the PLO, will play in the new arrangement. This reconciliation comes amidst ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with significant impacts on the governance of Palestinian territories.

### Background of the Conflict

The PLO, dominated by Fatah, has historically governed the West Bank, while Hamas has controlled Gaza since 2007. Previous attempts at unity have often failed, with the most recent reconciliation attempt in 2017 collapsing due to violence.

At the press conference in Beijing, Hamas representative Mousa Abu Marzook described the agreement as part of a course of reconciliation, and defended Hamas’ actions in the recent conflict. China, positioning itself as a mediator in the Middle East, has not condemned Hamas for its attacks on Israel, and continues to advocate for Palestinian statehood.

China's involvement in the reconciliation talks is part of its broader strategy to increase its influence in the Middle East. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for international peace conferences and has dispatched special envoys to the region, aiming to present China as a peace broker.

### Future Implications

The agreement signed in Beijing marks a significant step towards Palestinian unity. However, its effectiveness and implementation remain to be seen, as the region continues to grapple with conflict and political complexities.

This development will be closely watched by the international community as it unfolds.
